As most Indy readers probably know, Mother's Day was never intended to be about a spike in the sale of flowers, candy and cards. The REAL Mothers Day was about the promotion of "the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace". Something the ruling elite in Washington would do well to consider. With that in mind, some two to three hundred mothers , children and their supporters marched into Northampton, Massachusetts today to mark the occasion.

To the peeling of church bells and applause of parade watchers, the march wound through town with their drums, banners, and Raging Grannies. Under gray skies and a stiff wind, the march wound up downtown at the Hestia Mural, which depicts women throughout history and their struggles.

Organizers for the event included: Northampton Committee to Stop the War Against Iraq; Arise for Social Justice; Social Workers for Peace and Justice; SAGE; Women in Black; American Friends Service Committee of Western Mass; the Raging Grannies; Mass. state Rep. Ellen Story; The Matriots; Mothers Against War; Tikkun Olam Committee of Jewish Community of Amherst; Green-Rainbow Party of Amherst; Connecticut Valley Coalition for Women's Lives; Men's Resource Center of Western Mass; and the Social Justice Committee of Unitarian Universalist Soc. of Northampton/Florence.

As noted by the groups announcement for the march: "we will be asking you to honor the women of peace and justice in your lives - be they from the past, present, well-known, or friend or relative. Celebrate courageous women in all walks of life who have worked, and continue to work for peace and justice." Such work is needed now more than ever given that The Empire and its minions seem bent on the opposite goals. Happy Mother's Day.
