Shortly after the September 11 attacks, a weekly anti-war vigil began at Worcester's Lincoln Square. Many motorists expressed their views with a toot, shout, thumbs up, thumbs down, or an obscene gesture.
To measure public opinion, the protestors tallied the responses during the hour-long demonstration. Between 80 and 110 people usually weighed in.
To the surprise of the activists, in 2001 four times as many people favored peace as war. This grew to 6:1 in 2004, and averaged 10:1 in 2005, recently as high as 13:1.
But this week's response was off the charts. 118 motorists were for peace and 3 for war, a record-setting 40:1!
An extra vigil is planned this week to oppose the President's ever-changing rationalizations for this war, to oppose the Administration's cheap shots at Cindy Sheehan, and to support efforts for a swift withdrawal from Iraq.

The follow-up demonstration was encouraging. 193 motorists expressed support, 13 expressed disagreement. Usually 100 people "vote," so this was twice the reaction the vigil gets. I hope this is a sign of change in our attitudes about this war.
