Anti-Gay "Mr.Hetero Contest" Coming to Mechanics Hall ~ February 18th

Evangelical Christian Pastor, Tom Crouse of Holland, MA has transplanted his “Mr.
Hetero” contest to Worcester’s Mechanics Hall for Saturday, February 18th, 2006.
Rev. Crouse came up with the idea of the “Mr. Hetero”
contest as a way of promoting “God’s Design” in response to a “Mr. Gay 2005”
competition recently held in San Diego. After the Sturbridge Host Hotel
forced the cancellation of his plans for an earlier show, Pastor Crouse
announced on Thursday, January 5th, that he will be holding his “Mr.
Hetero” contest and media spectacle within the hallowed halls of Mechanics
Hall.
At
his press conference Pastor Crouse stated his belief that the event was not
“gay-bashing or hate filled”. That statement
has been regularly repeated, along his saying that he would like to see the
contest spread across the country but he wants to ‘oversee’ any other
productions so that they don’t degenerate into ‘gay bashing’.
While on one end Pastor Crouse declares leadership in
seeking to prevent "gay bashing", the facts speak differently. When
word of the Sturbridge event first broke, Pastor Crouse made clear that he
believes homosexuality is a sin. And much like with his radio show, he has
promised the "Mr. Hetero" event will include someone who
"formerly lived a homosexual lifestyle” but saw the light and now lives a
straight lifestyle.
Pastor Crouse’s own sermonizing on efforts to repeal Massachusetts’ legalization of gay marriage,
taken from his church’s web page, provides a deeper look.
“I am thoroughly
convinced if the people of Massachusetts get to vote they like
those from every other state will vote for marriage to be defined as one man
one woman. The pro gay movement is scared to death of the people being
allowed to vote because they also know they do not have a hope if it goes to
the people, They know that what an activist judicial branch created, the
legalization of gay marriage, the people will overturn. . . . I believe it is
incumbent as believers to be in this fight. This is a battle for the minds
and souls of our young people. God in His sovereignty has placed us in
this time of history. Of all the people in the world we should be leading
this battle. It is what Christians throughout the ages have done, fight the wrongs of society. . . . It is to be the
product of our faith that when heinous things like slavery, abortion or the
legalization of gay marriage come along, we engage in the fight. . . . Gay
marriage is a perversion of God's design for family. Unbelievers know
this. This is our time in history to stand up and fight for what is
right. I do not want to be sitting in a rocking chair with my grandchildren one
day , or tossing a ball with them, or taking them for ice cream and have them
ask me, "what did you do grandpa when they tried to make gay marriage
legal?", and not have the right answer. The right answer to our
grandchildren will be "I fought it every
way I could, our church stood up for what was right and we fought it. . . .
Onward Christian Soldiers!”
In recent years, Pastor Crouse has been the radio host of
“Engaging Your World” broadcast on local Christian radio station WVNE 760 AM in
Worcester and a look at his past show archive thanks to Google’s cache, reveals
a recurring list of anti-gay guests.
But while it’s relatively easy to document Pastor Crouse’s
anti-gay rhetoric and highlight his earlier radio promotions, it is much less
clear where he’s going with the “Mr. Hetero” contest. Surprisingly, Pastor
Crouse has pulled his “Engaging Your World” web site down recently and is now re-directing
radio show traffic to his Mr. Hetero page instead. (www.mrhetero.com) It makes you wonder what his priority is.
You can’t listen to Pastor Crouse without thinking this is
all a game to him and a chance to capture as much media attention as possible.
He’s clearly a media savvy chap. His web pages are registered under “Engaging
Your World Promotions”, and on the
Mr. Hetero site he maintains a list of the growing number of media shows he’s
been on. His Mechanics Hall press conference started engagingly upbeat with
laughter as he announced plans to “do a lot of politically incorrect things”
with plans to say the Pledge of Allegiance making sure to say “one nation under
God” and promises to say “Merry Christmas” repeatedly. While the press
conference was an effort to disarm, it was also clearly an effort to play to
the national media stage.
Additionally, at the same time that the move to Mechanics
Hall was being announced, the kitschy early-90’s style Mr. Hetero website (see
below) hawking bumper stickers, shirts, mugs and increasingly passé rubber
bracelets, was replaced with a much slicker flash-based site albeit still
hawking bumper stickers, shirts, mugs etc.
Contest trinkets, and a perusal of Crouse’s web page makes
it pretty clear this is a made for media spectacle, reinforced by media
attention grabbers like the contest to tear up Oprah magazines.
But even media wannabes can build frightening movements as
they attract attention, partners and friends. Take for instance the willingness
of stately Mechanics Hall to ink out a contract for Mr. Hetero, and it didn’t
stop there, Mechanics Hall took the additional and totally unnecessary step of
rolling out the red carpet and hosting a press conference! Someone(s) at Mechanics Hall is behind this event
100%.
And that’s the rub, as partners like Mechanics Hall sign-on
for the sure to snowball media rush, so to will airwave time with Rush, Fox and
Pat Robertson.
And with claimed future events already
being planned for Albany, NY and Louisville, KY it’s just possible that what
started out as not much more than a small town minstrel show,
could end up sending us backwards for years.

Actually, plenty of homosexuals have kids. And plenty of heterosexuals are sterile. I'm still not sure of the point of the STERILE graphic. If the point is, "Two women, in isolation, can't reproduce," then the graphic is a waste of effort, as we all learn this as small children. BTW, the Bible speaks quite highly of celebacy, which is not a fertile lifestyle.

So I have a question. I'll preface it by saying that I am gay/queer and that I am strongly in favor of gay marriage, gay rights, and opposition to homophobia and heterosexism. That being said, is the brewing community response to Mr. Hetero appropriate? I mean, what's worse, to be denounced or to be ignored? I really think that nobody is going to go to Mr. Hetero because homophobic or not, offensive or not, mean-spirited or not, it is, above all, a really dumb idea. I think it's possible that there will be like 5 spectators at this thing. Rather than drawing attention to and semi-legitimizing the entire thing by creating a big hoopla might it not be better for us all to maybe go out for ice-cream with someone special, enjoy a nice, deep same-sex tongue kiss or two, and let the event flop of its own accord? Just curious what people think...

I understand Paul's feelings, and I've heard the same thing expressed by others. After listening to Pastor Crouse at this press conference I'm also not worried that the event will be an hour+ diatribe, sermon or spewing of hate directed against my gLBTQ friends.
For me, this is what people who work with students and youth often call at "teaching moment". An opportunity when people are listening a little more than usual, curious or even eager to learn and become involved. A candlelight vigil and a queer kiss-in create a focal point, something to invite people to commit to and give their personal time to. But far more important is the time each of us now gives to conversations in the community about the issues being raised. We are now in the midst of a "teach-in", leading up to the Mr.Hetero contest on the 18th.
The on-line statement, vigil and kiss-in will also create an opportunit to assess where "Worcester" truly is on these issues. David Rushford took a strong stand on Gay marriage, and City Officials allowed him to maintain that position, but if you look at the current signatories to the "hate has no home here" statement, he stands ALONE as a City Official willing to put his name to a statement.
We should all be watching to see which of our elected "representatives" add their names to this statement, and who chooses to participate OR Stay Away from the vigil and kiss-in.

At this point, it seems like the reponses to Mr. Hetero will be more popular, more interesting, and more enjoyable than the event itself.
Maybe we should think less of these as responses to Mr. Hetero, and more of them as a Feb 18 citywide tolerance festival.

I am ashamed that history has taught some of us nothing about acceptance. Just 50 years ago it would not be strange for a black man and a white man to go to different schools, use different facilities and have different salaries. Now that would be wrong and against the rights of every person in this country. In 50 years how will the world look on what some of our generation has done about gay rights. Will we be seen the same as our parents, or will we finally understand the meaning of “civil rights.”
A man who organizes a contest aimed at hate is no man of God, for God does not hate anyone. A man who preaches that gays, Muslims and Catholics are going to hell knows no God for he would know not to pass judgment onto others.
I feel ashamed that this man organized a hate rally with the understanding of God. How dare he play God! When his judgment day comes, what do you think God will think of a man that hates the people that he is supposed to guide?
Don’t be misguided; the words that this man speaks are not of God.
I have a dream that someday all of Gods creatures will live without war, oppression and misguidance. I have a dream that gays and straights will not hate each other for they are still both Gods creatures. I have a dream that racism will someday be a thing of the past, that no matter what you call God, you will be accepted by everyone. This is my dream, I hope that I live to see it happen.

I have to laugh at how short sighted some people are when they try to sum up the point of all life as the ability to reproduce. Any pair of people with functioning genetals can make a baby and in this day it is not even nessecary for them to have intercourse.
The ability to create a child is NOTHING in comparison to the ability to raise and care for said child. Maybe if you were old/mature enough to have a child yourself you might understand what I am talking about. The next time you feel like declaring what your god's great plans are, you might think about the bigger picture instead of trying to cram 'reality' into your narrow perspective to make your predetermined conclusion sound logical.

Here is the real story. Tom Crouse came to Holland several years ago to put a minister in place a modest small town church. He rallied people who listened to his radio show to attend church in the town. Soon the small town church grew larger. The original members of the church were impressed. He convinced the small town they needed a larger church to house everyone under one roof. He collected their funds. He said they needed to make changes to the plans for the church. He collected their money. He put various courses of study in the church. He collected their money. He had his daughter record a CD. He collected the money from his flock. And that is the real story.

Tom Crouse is suppose to be a speaker at a pastor's conference in the Antiqua this week, March 13-17. After spending hours on the internet I cannot find where he is speaking. He is also going to Ireland and the Phillipines to speak at conferences. Again I can't find any references to him on any sites or convention agenda. WOULD A PASTOR LIKE TOM CROUSE BE A LIAR? PEOPLE IN HIS CONGREGATION, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!!!!!!!

Christianity as a religion is intolerant. That's a fact. The Bible talks of god seperating the sheep to his right and goats to his left. But in Acts, the Bible tells me, as an Christian individual, to be tolerant of sinners, but that doesn't mean actually accepting them. It means that I shouldn't turn my face from them, it means I shouldn't abandon them. If anything, I shouldn't give up on them. But changing a heart involves rebuking and strong messages.
