I was on my way to the Amherst dump this morning when I spotted a hiker on the far side of the road. He had a placard on his back that said something like "A Walk across Massachusetts". I immediately put on my reporters hat, did a u-turn, and pulled up next to him for a brief interview. His name is BJ Hill, a 30 year old teacher from Leicester, MA whose mission is to walk from Williamstown on the New York State line all the way to P-Town on the Cape gathering comments from residents of the Commonwealth to deliver to the new Governor upon his or her inauguration.
BJ writes on his website:
"After the inauguration, I will request 15 minutes to hand over the messages from the people of Massachusetts to the new Governor of Massachusetts. Hopefully this will be a great democratic start to the next four years." Let's hope so. The Bush Era can't go on forever, right??
From Amherst, BJ will pass through "Belchertown, Ware, West Brookfield, Brookfield, East Brookfield, Spencer, his hometown of Leicester, Worcester, Grafton, Upton, Hopedale, Milford, Bellingham, Franklin, Wrentham, Foxborough, Mansfield, West Bridgewater, Bridgewater, Middleborough, South Middleborough, Wareham, Bourne, Sandwich, Barnestable, Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown". Ouch! Hope it's not cold in P-Town to soak those sore feet in some of that excellent Atlantic salt water.
You can contact BJ by email or leave comments on his site (though at the moment the comments are turned off), keep posted on his progress, and I imagine you can add your comments to his book for the future Gov of Massachusetts. Good luck BJ and Happy trails!
