“This is a space for neighbors to meet,” called out Nanette Davis, Women Together co-founder who’s son was a victim of violence several years ago. Her positive message rang out loudly, “Yes, my son was lost, but the day this park was opened, he was found.”
A large crowd of neighbors, Women Together members and supporters, Christian Community Church members and city and state officials, gathered this morning to celebrate the completion of a beautiful peace park at the corner of Winslow and Pleasant Streets.
Mary Keefe, of the Pleasant Street Neighborhood Network Center, brought the story of how so many did not believe their dream could become a reality. But today this group of dedicated community organizers had something tangible, beautiful, and moving to show those who doubted. Keefe said that it took “respect, trust, hard work, and negotiation to get it done and build a powerful neighborhood that we envision.”
Jen Solin, also a Women Together member, also wrote about this vision in a piece featured in the program of the event:
This is a park that comes from the people. It is about turning violence into peace, turning strangers into friends, turning an Earth Day clean-up into year-round beauty. This park is about dreaming big, even when you can’t image it to be possible. It is about joining forces with others because a hundred voices are stronger than one.
All are invited to a community celebration at the new park with ice cream & fun. It was originally planned for tonight at 5:30pm, but due to rain it will take place:
