Groups organizing in the Green Island Neighborhood recently came together to celebrate a year of accomplishments and to collectively call on City leadership to keep the Crompton Park Pool open.
Green Island Together, East Coast Autowerks and Pernet Family Health all joined together in the organizing effort.
Organizers estimate over 400 neighborhood residents participated, eating nearly that many hot dogs in between carnival games, a moonbounce, stage coach rides, music, breakin' and graffin'.
Local artists and youth created two Green Island graffiti pride boards which are now displayed at the Green Island community garden on Seymour Street. The groups also celebrated the year's accomplishments, youth jobs initiatives including Green Island Gardeners and the Crash Course automotive program, as well as environmental clean-ups.
On everyone's mind was the need to save the Crompton Park pool from being closed. Organizers continue to highlight this neighborhood priority,
"Saving the pool was a big inspiration for us in building the Green Island Fall Fest. When the hearing occurs, it is important that we all turn out to let City Council know that we care about our pool, and want it fixed up, not eliminated. Let’s meet this challenge with Green Island pride, and save our pool at Crompton Park!"
