On Friday, Nov. 21st 2008, about 30 people gathered at AIDS Project Worcester for the city's third Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Trans DOR is a memorial created by the transgender and gender variant community, and allies, in order to remember people who have been killed simply because they are or are perceived to be transgender.

About 2 transgender people are murdered every month due to anti-transgender violence and hatred. This does not count the many members of the transgender and gender variant community who die of other preventable causes related to oppression of transgender people, including homelessness, suicide, poverty, addiction, HIV, and lack of adequate shelter or health care.

Jesse Pack, director of Prevention and Education and head of GLBT services at APW, presided over the service. About 30 people participated in prayers for the deceased, and shared personal thoughts and testimony to the impact of violence against transgender people in their own lives.

Raven Kaldera, a shaman and spiritual leader from Central Massachusetts, urged us to "remember who you are" and to protect and support one another in the community.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance began in response to the murder of Rita Hester, a popular figure in the Boston rock music scene who was murdered on November 28th, 1998 because she was transgender. Her murder, like most murders of transgender people, remains unsolved.

There will be an organizing meeting at AIDS Project Worcester, 85 Green Street, on December 10th at 6pm of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition. The purpose of the meeting will be to create a strategy to pass a gender identity non-discrimination bill in Massachusetts, preventing employers, landlords, health care providers, shelter providers, police, and all other officials from discriminating simply because someone is transgender. At present, many transgender people are denied employment, housing, and basic services such as shelter because of their transgender status. Everyone interested in passing a non-discrimination law is invited to attend.

This year at Worcester's Transgender Day of Remembrance community members memorialized 29 known deaths of transgender and gender variant individuals that occurred in 2008. (Information from http://www.rememberingourdead.org/day/what.html)
